"Ukraine Asks Russia To Investigate Former Ukrainian Official
19 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Ukrainian prosecutors have asked Russia to launch a criminal investigation into a former high-ranking Ukrainian official in connection with the loss of millions of dollars of state funds.
Under former President Leonid Kuchma, Ihor Bakay headed the department responsible for state property. He has Russian citizenship and is currently living in Russia.
Ukraine's Prosecutor-General's Office today said it had completed its own investigation into Bakay, compiling a 100-volume case based on charges of abuse of office.
A spokesman said Bakay has allegedly cost Ukraine losses of some $70 million.
Ukraine has put Bakay on an international wanted list, but Moscow has said it will not extradite him. ..."
