There's plenty of folks in America and elsewhere in the West who care and have the motivation and resources to deal with the problem. Not the case here. So much of life here is left-over from the Soviet Union, just because the government changed in 1991, doesn't mean the culture did, it didn't. Human being are not respected and considered important here, the attitude here if something bad happens is, "so what". One of my employees and a close personal friend was pregnant, all of us were really happy and looking forward to the birth, there was so much eager anticipation and joy, for them - a happy couple, for their family and friends and within our whole company. On the day of delivery, something "went wrong", what should have been a routine delivery, turned into a sad day none of us will ever forget. Ukrainian maternity hospitals are different from American ones, none of the family or even the husband were allowed in (if they could prevent the mother being there, I'm sure they'd do that as well). So what went wrong we don't really know, the delivery was caesarian, and the mother was given anesthesia. When she awoke and asked to see her child, she was given some excuses, about the staff being busy, etc. Finally her husband came in and she learned the awful truth, her baby had died. What went wrong we're not sure of, because we were told conflicting stories, they were never allowed to see the body, or to have an autopsy performed, and were not given the remains. My friend was devastated, more painfully wounded than any human being I have ever seen in my life. We all cried with them. I arranged for her husband to get a lawyer and approached them for more information and an investigation. The result was they were threatened with a lawsuit, and would file civil documents that said she was insane and was trying to persecute them and would get the equivalent of a restraining order. They were intimidated and in a fragile state and didn't want a fight (but I sure did!), so we let it go. This story is a personal one to me, because of not only this experience but others as well. No one here, no one at all really wants to deal with this or similar problems, but I'm telling you children are dying here, children are being sold here, children are being starved, abused, on a massive scale and it seems to me like no one really gives a damn. People here just want to talk about their petty issues, while every day real tragedy happens everywhere all over Ukraine. Isn't that nice.
