So in the universe YOU live in, the following sentences are the same. "The candles added a certain ambiance to the dinner". "The candles added a certain ambience to the dinner". In a French dictionary, you WILL find the word ambiant, ambiance is a "borrowed" French word. Another borrowed French word is passé, meaning passed.
