No officials in Ukraine have any real interest in investigating this. The local officials only reluctantly became involved after there was so much foreign media and governmental attention paid to this particular case. I have a friend in Crimea who had this same thing happen to her. I am beginning to think that this is a wide spread phenomena in Ukraine. The police will quickly lose interest if the case cannot produce a profit for them, so they'll move on to their next opportunity (er, “investigation”). Most of the orphanages here have a “backdoor” where you can buy the child of your choice for about 20,000 USD all documents included! The government not only knows about it, but they also happen to collect about 20% of this fee. You see people are just another resource here. They can be bought and sold, and no one here really cares, that's why every year Ukraine is criticized for it's lack of measures in dealing with human trafficking, even though Ukraine happens to be one of the major supplier of victims.
