Since we have to pick one item, I picked the 1933 famine as the event since it deprived Ukraine not only of living millions but of millions that would, because of the death of potential parents, would never be born. On grounds of probability, the famine deprived the Uke nation forever of potential geniuses - or highly talented persons in all fields of human endeavour. Since Ukraine had been impoverished centurty after cwentury of its intelligentsia/aristocracy, it fell further and further behind other European nations in the course of centuries. Many of the results of that tragedy we see in Ukraine today
