The list of choices is extensive, but I woul;d have to day that the December 1991 referendum results, where the overwhelming majority of Ukrainian citizrens confirmed their desire to live in an independent, Ukrainian, state, is the sea event of the 20th century in Ukrainian history. As close seconds, I would put the August 1991 Verkhovna Rada declaration of Ukrainian independence, and the 1939 DE FACTO unification of (most) Western and Eastern Ukrainian land by (yes) Stalin. Running in a tie for third place are the 1954 transfer of the Crimea to Ukrainian jurisdiction and an event that is not on the list of options, namely the arrival of Yarema Bachynsky of New York City in Ukraine in August, 1996.
