Do you think it is worth it?
I mean this is just a couple of kids winning scholarships to topflight high schools and colleges. This is not going to be a fundraising event.
I think it is a bit lik a bar mitzvah. It is the beginning of responsibility for the kids. I just want people to be informed that something is possible.
We had a dinner last year and two or three non- members of the program showed up. Admittedly, I did not publicize it as much. It is the end of the summer. People will be away.
My intention is relatively modest: broaden the area of support and create a real footprint here in the East Village so that my work is easier. If I end up with two or three new reliable supporters of the program I would be happy.
Too much publicity may produce more work. That is, people will come to me asking me for help with their relatives here or there. I believe in controlled growth. I do not believe in high prestige events or Ukrainian type celebrations. I rarely celebrate and prefer rather to work and do things.
I have thought of holding a convention here in the East Village for Ukrainian Students.
We have held a convention of students once at Columbia University. Finally, we have had a Thanksgiving weekend dinner and since we have had many more arrivals in the last three years, we may hold one again this week. Many college students get a week off for Thanksgiving.
Organizing all of this and hosting the kids as they arrive all takes time and effort and I have to work.
I will invite the Consulate to send a representative.
