Unfortunately, when there is a large event, it rarely, if ever, is a good one. The disaster at Chornobyl illustrated to the world what would happen once we let the genie out of the bottle- and it was not a beautiful sight. But, like all things, there is a yin and yang, in that the reaction by the human beings who could help control the conflagration, the men who could do something about the disaster did something about it did something about it- only to lose their lives to save the livlihood of their children. It was nothing short of heroic- not the kind of heroism in the movies- but the kind of heroism that calls for the ultimate and untimely sacrifice.
Chornobyl was indeed the event that will be on our minds as we prod reluctantly into the next century. There will never be another Hitler or Stalin- we are not that dumb- but a nuclear disaster we shall face every day of our lives.
