: : Not with dictatorship, but after it's gone. The most vicious example no one, of course, wants, was Germany.

: I still don't see why you need some dictatorship. It would just not be a very smart step for Ukraine. Ukraine has had enough of various dictatorships, occupation administrations, etc.

Ukraine never had its own dictatorship, not in the past few centuries anyway. A mild dictatorship will destroy oligarchy, corruption and will strenghten the economy. I'm not saying it's the only way, it's just one of the ways. Everything being the way it is won't do Ukraine any good.

: What it needs now is a stable democracy with very strong rule of law.

You call the present government "democratic" and "with very strong rule of law"? Only radical changes like firing all ex-communist apparatchiks from the government, not only the central government but from regional, municipal etc. Pretty much like it was done in Western Ukraine. The ease with which those people changed ideology shows how easily they can betray Ukraine.

: : : I would direct your attention at some very different things. E.g. both Lithuania and Poland have so called "lustration laws" which require from people who cooperated with the KGB to declare (at least secretely) these facts of their lives. I think Ukraine must follow these examples instead of trying to go the "Putin way".

: : That won't help much.

: Any special reasons? It seems to help a lot to Lithuania and Poland.

Because there aren't many people that co-operated with KGB left in Ukraine's government. Old communists - sure. But not too important ones. This law would be interesting to pass in Ukraine, and if it would help, that would be good.
