It was... quite predictable that many nationally conscious Ukrainians would be outraged when it was announced recently that Ukraine’s vice prime minister for humanitarian issues, Volodymyr Semynozhenko, had agreed with Russian counterpart Valentina Matvienko on the need to hold bilateral talks on the content of the history textbooks used in the two countries’ schools...It would certainly be desirable for Ukraine if some of these stereotypes were put in their context, so that future generations of Russians would be aware of the magnitude of the crimes committed against Ukraine by the tsarist and Soviet regimes...Instead, it seems more likely that whatever amendments are agreed upon will be aimed at softening the unpalatable details of Russian oppression in Ukrainian textbooks.
