Excerpt From 23 May 2002 Kyiv Post:

....The inscription on the tomb....would highlight centuries of Poland’s domination of Ukraine.
For hundreds of years, Lviv was ruled by Poland and subsequently the Austro‑Hungarian empire. After Austro‑Hungary disintegrated in 1918, the empire’s Ukrainian population gained independence and proclaimed the West Ukrainian People’s Republic. Newly independent Poland invaded Ukrainian territory and occupied much of western Ukraine....The dispute over the monument started several years ago after Poland started pushing for an inscription on the tomb that would highlight Lviv’s Polish past, a sensitive issue for many of the city’s residents, who regard the war in 1918 as an assault on independent Ukraine.
“First they wanted an inscription that would call the Poles who died in the war ‘defenders of Lviv,’” he said. “But defenders from who? From Ukrainians?”
He said Poland also insisted that the inscription be written in Polish only, while the Lviv residents wanted the words written in Polish and Ukrainian. He said the city rejected the inscription, derailing the cemetery’s opening despite pressure from Kyiv to settle the issue to maintain relations.
