The reason Kievan Rus chose Christianity way back when because such religion did not oppose drinking, as did Islam.
I think excessive drinking came to Ukraine via Soviet life style.....my dad used to tell me how in 1930's in Boikivshchina 12 grown men would drink one bottle of liquer for two days over the holidays.
I think nowdays drinking is a way to experience short term euphoria, buy a time -out from grim reality.
