International human rights activist murdered in central Ukrainian city

Vinnytsya, 10 July: The burial of leader of the nongovernmental organization Podillya Brotherhood of Refugees, a co-founder of the Vinnytsya-based group of Amnesty International - Ukrayina-5 - Nshimumuremya Patris, is scheduled for 1600 [1300 gmt] today. Patris was brutally murdered on 8 July.
The barbarous crime on Midsummer's Day provoked public outcry in Vinnytsya, UNIAN learnt at the Vinnytsya-based Ukrayina-5 group of Amnesty International. Dr Patris, one of the oldest refugees in Vinnytsya Region, was brutally murdered on the stairs of the building on Keletska Street, where he lived with his wife and his 1.5-year-old daughter.

A consistent atheist, Patris was one of the most active campaigners for abolition of the death penalty in Ukraine and internationally. He used to collect signatures during Amnesty International's campaigns for establishment of a permanent international criminal court and for prosecuting those responsible for crimes against humanity.
The Vinnytsya group of Amnesty International suspects that the murder was prompted by racist motives. The group wants the investigation to examine this version.
