: First of all, Ukraine should not have two patriarchates. That is the real issue here.
: Most Orthodox Ukrainians in Ukraine -- for better or for worse -- belong to the Moscow Patriarchate, even though they (in most regions) have a choice. So if the "majority" matters at all, then the poll results are contrary to the reality of Ukraine. Before any property is granted to one or another group, the split Ukrainian churches should reunite, and elect a new bishop, preferably one who was not a KGB agent and who has no canonical impediments. The present patriarch of Kyiv has several canonical impediments (he's married with three children).
: The two monasteries are inhabited by monks who live, pray, work, and worship God there. Doesn't their opinion matter the most?
: I hope we can all agree that this is an issue the Ukrainian government shouldn't involve itself in. The government hasn't exactly been friendly to the Church in the last 300 years. Since the property doesn't belong to the government, or to anyone in the diaspora, both said parties should not be involved.
: One thing that is definitely clear: Ukraine desperately needs an Orthodox Church that is self-governing for the spiritual benefit of Ukraine. Both the Soviet and Russian empires are dead, and the presence of a Muscovite-centered church in Ukraine is just a memorial to imperial times. This can only happen in Ukraine from within the Church and without outside involvement...otherwise it won't be authentic.
: The fact that there are many Russians in Ukraine doesn't matter, either. There are also plenty of Ukrainians in Russia.
Its a very good realistic fine statement. But you have to remember that for so many years everybody and his mother tried to break up Ukrainians into groups. All countries bordering Ukraine, were responsible for creation of chaotic differnces between our people but mostly Rosia.Throughout the 300yrs.(3 centures)they tried to dominate Ukraine and its people. To them,(Rosians)"Kyivan-Rus"has very "Vital Impotance" meaning to their history, with out "Kyivan-Rus"Ukraine they never will be Rosia Supper-Power.As long as Ukraine will be Free Independed Country all the former soviat republics will do the same.So for now Rosia is creating many problems in any way they can.Through economy, religion and language, which I am sure they donate lots attention and money to the opossite side to create chaos against Ukraine,to show that the Ukrainian people will be better off with Rosias language and their religion. Its not that easy to bring people to unite and see the bright future in Ukraine, its there for them no matter what languages or what religon they believe, because Ukraine is there to stay Free and Independed for all people that live on Ukrainian soil.As long as people support the government as they proofed during refferendum vote, they have to demand from the government officials to lead them and give them better living standart, which Ukraine is cabable enough to give them even more. Now for the churches to unite, the government can not be negative in this matter because people follow the leaders,if the leaders show that they care people will unite in no time in near future.Do not judge the person what "HE" was but what is he doing now and the future. The deeds must be recognized good or bad,if bad throw the person out with free demonstraitions and demands, march on Kyiv: its only way that people will show their prefference and unity. There must be only "ONE" leader either in religio or in government, otherwise it caouses problems. To many cooks spoil the Borshtch. But most of all the future of UKraine lays in the people hand.As the saying goes "United We Stand, separated We fall.
