Until recently, both the Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox churches observed holydays strictly according to the Julian Calendar*. Christmas Day, for example, is celebrated on January 7 by the Orthodox and Eastern Rite Catholic churches, while in the Roman Catholic tradition Christmas is celebrated on December 25. Many Ukrainian Catholic churches are now changing over from the Julian to the Gregorian. The changeover from the older tradition has caused considerable controversy among congregations. What's your opinion?
* About the calendars:
The "Julian Calendar" was established by Julius Ceasar in 45 BC. It remained in effect until 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII devised a more precise measurement of time. The world has adopted the use of that new calendar which is known as the "Gregorian Calendar," and sometimes called the "Christian Calendar."
