Moscow, 29 March: The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Aleksey II believes that the visit of Pope John Paul II to Ukraine will further aggravate the difficult relations between the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. [...] [I]f the pope does visit Ukraine, it will only consolidate the status quo with which the Russian Orthodox Church can in no way agree, he said.
The patriarch was disappointed that in Ukraine, the pope plans to meet with dissenters, implying representatives of the Kiev Patriarchate that has split away from the Moscow Patriarchate.
[...] He repeated once more that his meeting with the pope is possible, adding that such a historic event "should be well-prepared and this requires the removal of obstacles that exist today."
