*The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus elects Bohdan Heryavenko as new Artistic
Director and Conductor *
**
*Detroit* – At its Biennial Meeting held on May 1, 2010 in Warren, Michigan,
the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus membership elected Bohdan Heryavenko its
eighth conductor in North America since 1949. Maestro Heryavenko will
immediately begin working with the UBC.

In December of 2009, the UBC Executive Board appointed a Conductor Search
Committee which included the following UBC members: Ihor Kusznir, Committee
Chairman and current UBC Assistant Conductor; Anatoli W. Murha, Committee
Secretary and current UBC President; George Metulynsky, Roman Beley, Andrij
Kytasty, Andrij Birko, and Myron Trembly.

Mr. Kusznir stated that, "The search process revealed several highly
qualified candidates. The initial search identified potential candidates
throughout North America. A select number of candidates were contacted, all
of whom were honored to be considered for the position. Candidates were
given a detailed job description, asked to submit a resume and upon
committee review of the resumes, interviews were held with select
candidates. Following the interviews, candidates were invited to participate
in a working session with the full UBC concert ensemble. “

Mr. Heryavenko started his formal musical studies at the Lviv Musical
Pedagogical College where he received an honors degree. Following
graduation, Heryavenko began his choirmaster education at the Lviv State
Conservatory. Upon completion of the choirmaster program, Heryavenko
continued his studies at the Lviv Conservatory in Opera and Symphonic
Conducting and graduated under the direction of renowned composer and
conductor Mykola Kolessa.

Prior to immigrating to the United States, Maestro Heryavenko held the
prestigious position of Chief Choirmaster of the Lviv Opera and Ballet
Theatre in Lviv, Ukraine. His professional career began in 1978 and over the
course of the next 16 years; he held positions of conductor and choirmaster
of various choirs resulting in his appointment of chief choirmaster of the
Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre in 1994. Here, one of his most significant
contributions was working on the premiere of Myroslav Skoryk’s Opera
*Moses*which debuted at the Lviv Opera and Ballet Theatre in 2001.

In addition to his many distinguished awards, Maestro Heryavenko is
recognized for his expertise in sacred music. His performance experience has
taken him to Bulgaria, Lebanon, Germany, Austria, Poland, and the United
States. Maestro Heryavenko currently resides with his family in Chicago,
Illinois.

UBC President Anatoli Murha had the following to say, “The Artistic Director
and Conductor leads the UBC’s artistic activities but his most important
function is to define a higher artistic potential and lead the UBC toward
achieving it. This incredible responsibility requires an individual of great
musical integrity, creative talent, appreciation and most importantly,
respect of the history and tradition of the UBC and everything they
represent. The strength, soul, and passion of the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus
is based on and grounded in, the longstanding history and traditions of the
*kobzari*.  Maestro Heryavenko’s extensive experience will help us expand
our ambassadorial mission.”

Mr. Anatoli W. Murha was re-elected President of the Executive Board for a
sixth term. Mr. Murha, 32, joined the UBC in 1992 at the age of 14. Since
2000, Mr. Murha has lead the UBC’s Executive Board and spearhead many of the
UBC’s projects including concerts and tours in Ukraine, England, France,
Germany, Austria, Canada, and the United States. Mr. Murha says, “I’ve had a
great team of people to work with who are always willing to volunteer their
time for the best interest of the UBC.”  The other newly-elected members of
the Executive Board are as follows: First Vice President, Roman Beley;
Second Vice President, John Kytasty; Secretary, Bohdan Pryjma; Treasurer,
Volodymyr Murha; Archivist, Ihor Stasiuk; Chorus Elder, Bohdan Sklierenko;
Members-at-Large - Ihor Kusznir, Andrij Sklierenko, Jeff Smolilo, and
Volodymyr Brechun.

The UBC also welcomed new members into its ranks at the Biennial Meeting.
When one first steps into the UBC, they are granted the status as “candidate
for membership.” For a period of two years, the candidate must meet artistic
requirements set forth by the UBC’s Artistic Council. Once a candidate has
met the requirements, they can be elevated to active member status by a
majority vote amongst the active members. The UBC class of 2010 includes the
following: Markian Gowda of Edmonton, Jeff Smolilo and Alexander Lys of
Cleveland, and Adrian Kwitkowsky and Joseph Tobianski of Detroit.

*Українська капеля бандуристів обирає Богдана Геря**в**енка новим мистецьким
керівником і дириґентом** *

*Детройт*. - На своїй щодворічній нараді, що відбулася 1 травня 2010 р. у
Ворені, штат Мічиґан, члени Української капелі бандуристів ім. Тараса
Шевченка обрали Богдана Герявенка своїм восьмим, від 1949 року, дириґентом у
Північній Америці. Maєстро Герявенко відразу ж почне працювати з Українською
капелею бандуристів ім. Т. Шевченка.

У грудні 2009 року Управа Української капелі бандуристів призначила Комітет
пошуку дириґента, який включав таких членів Капелі: Ігоря Кушніра, голову
Комітету та чинного заступника дириґента Капелі; Анатолія Мургу, писаря
Комітету та чинного президента Капелі; Юрка Метулинського, Романа Белея,
Андрія Китастого, Андрія Бірка та Мирона Тремблія.

Пан Кушнір заявив, що "процес пошуку виявив низку високофахових кандидатів.
Первісний пошук визначив потенційних кандидатів на території Північної
Америки. З певним числом кандидатів було встановлено контакти, кожен з них
мав честь бути розглянутим на цю посаду. Кандидати отримали детальний опис
роботи, прохання представити резюме, і після того як комітет переглянув
резюме, проведено співбесіди з деякими кандидатами. Після співбесід
кандидати були запрошені для участі в робочій нараді з повним концертовим
складом Української капелі бандуристів".

Пан Герявенко почав свою офіційну музичну освіту у Львівському
музично-педагогічному училищі, де він отримав диплом з відзнакою. Після
закінчення закладу Герявенко розпочав освіту хормейстера у Львівській
державній консерваторії.  Завершивши програму хормейстера, Герявенко
продовжив навчання у Львівській консерваторії в ділянці оперно-симфонічного
дириґування, яке завершив під керівництвом відомого композитора й дириґента
Миколи Колесси.

Перед імміграцією до Сполучених Штатів, Маєстро Герявенко обіймав престижну
посаду  головного хормейстера Львівського театру опери та балету у Львові, в
Україні. Його фахова кар'єра почалася 1978 року й упродовж наступних 16
років він займав посади дириґента й хормейстера низки хорів, що завершилося
призначенням його 1994 року головним хормейстром Львівського театру опери та
балету. Тут одним з найзначніших його внесків була праця над прем'єрою опери
"Мойсей" Мирослава Скорика, яка дебютувала у Львівському театрі опери та
балету 2001 року.

На додаток до його багатьох визначних нагород, Maєстро Герявенко є визнаним
завдяки своєму досвіду в духовній музиці. Його виконавський досвід привів
його до Болгарії, Лівану, Німеччини, Австрії, Польщі й Сполучених Штатів.
Маєстро Герявенко в даний час мешкає зі своєю родиною в Чикаґо, штат
Іллінойс.

Президент Української капелі бандуристів  Анатолій Мурга сказав таке:
"Мистецький керівник і дириґент спрямовує мистецьку діяльність Української
капелі бандуристів, але його найважливіша функція полягає в тому, щоб
визначити вищий мистецький потенціал і вести Капелю до його досягнення. Ця
неймовірна відповідальність вимагає від окремої особи великої музичної
цілісності, творчого таланту, цінування і, найголовніше, поваги до історії
та традицій Української капелі бандуристів та всього, що вони представляють.
Сила, душа і пристрасть Української капелі бандуристів основані й
обґрунтовуються багаторічною історією й традиціями кобзарів. Осяжний досвід
Маєстра Герявенка допоможе нам розширити нашу посольську місію".

Пана А. В. Мургу переобрано головою Управи на шостий термін. Пан Мурга, 32,
вступив до Української капелї бандуристів ім. Тараса Шевченка 1992 року у
віці 14 років. З 2000 року пан Мурга очолював Управу Капелі та втілював
численні задуми Капелі, у тому числі концерти й тури по Україні, Англії,
Франції, Німеччині, Австрії, Канаді та Сполучених Штатах. Пан Мурга
говорить: "У мене була чудова команда людей для праці, які повсякчас були
готові добровільно жертвувати своїм часом для найкращого забезпечення
інтересів Української капелі бандуристів". У числі інших новообраних членів
Управи є такі: перший віце-президент Роман Белей; другий віце-президент Іван
Китастий; писар Богдан Прийма; скарбник Володимир Мурга; архівник Ігор
Стасюк; староста Капелі Богдан Скляренко; члени з особливих доручень - Ігор
Кушнір, Андрій Скляренко, Джеф Смолило та Володимир Брехун.

Українська капеля бандуристів ім. Тараса Шевченка  на своїй щодворічній
нараді також привітала до своїх лав нових членів. Роблячи свої перші кроки в
Капелі, вони отримують статус "кандидата на вступ". Протягом 2 років
кандидати повинні задовольнити мистецьким вимогам, установленим Мистецькою
радою Капелі. Як тільки кандидати відповідатимуть вимогам, вони можуть бути
підвищені до статусу дійсних членів більшістю голосів дійсних членів. Клас
2010 Української капелі бандуристів включає в себе: Маркіяна Ґовду з
Едмонтону, Джефа Смолила й Олександра Лиса з Клівленду, та Адріяна
Квітковського і Йосипа Тобянського з Детройту.

Українська капеля бандуристів ім. Тараса Шевченка незабаром оголосить свої
концертові й турові плани на 2011 рік під керівництвом Маєстра Богдана
Герявенка.

Founded in 1918, the *Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus* has a long and proud
history of representing the bandura and Ukrainian choral music on the
international stage.  Boasting a repertoire of more than 500 songs, this
internationally celebrated and award-winning ensemble has captivated
audiences in major concert halls in the United States, Canada, Europe,
Australia, and Ukraine since immigrating to North America from Europe in
1949.   They have also performed for such noted personalities as former
President Richard Nixon, former President Ronald Reagan, movie star Jack
Palance, and former President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk.   Most recently,
the Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus was featured at the internationally renowned
*Stratford Summer Music Festival*, and presented *Bandura Christmas
International* with Metropolitan Opera soloist Paul Plishka.  As a tribute
to its role in preserving and perpetuating the legacy of Ukrainian music,
the Chorus was selected by Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers as the *recipient
of the Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian State Prize, the highest award that can be
bestowed for excellence in the contribution to the arts*.
