alt="" /></a> Join us at 2 p.m. on October 30 as Dr. Yuri Shevchuk of
Columbia University presents a talk entitled "Ukrainian Under Attack
in Its Homeland: What Can We Do to Help?" and introduces his new
textbook, <em>Beginner's Ukrainian</em>. </p>
<p style="margin-top: 0px; font-size: 12px; margin-bottom: 12px; color:
rgb(0, 0, 0); line-height: 16px; font-family:
Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> Over the past decade, assimilationist
pressures on Ukrainian in its homeland have grown exponentially, in all
spheres, and in ever newer forms. Dr. Yuri Shevchuk will analyze the
current language situation in Ukraine and the challenges it presents for
teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language in North American universities
as well as to thousands of foreign students who receive their training in
Ukraine. Dr. Shevchuk's recently published textbook <em>Beginner's
Ukrainian</em> offers new strategies aimed at restoring the Ukrainian
language to the role and status it has been rapidly losing in Ukrainian
society. </p>
Copies of <em>Beginner's Ukrainian</em> (Hippocrene Books, 448 pages,
$35) will be available for sale and signing by Dr. Shevchuk after his
lecture. Admission to the event, which includes a reception, is $10; $5
for students (tickets available <a title="Order tickets safely online now"
