** Ian Mowat Memorial Fund Bursaries, 2006 **

The Ian Mowat Memorial Fund was established to commemorate Ian Mowat
(1946-2002), Librarian to the University of Edinburgh. Ian had a keen
interest in the development of libraries and librarianship across the world,
especially in those countries listed below. He also had a deep commitment
to career development for librarians.
The Fund now has two bursaries to offer library staff wishing to develop
their careers, through a four-week placement at Edinburgh University Library
during June 2006. These annual placements are not salaried, but the Fund
will cover all travel, accommodation and living expenses.
Applications are invited from librarians who are already working in the
public sector and who wish to develop their careers through experiencing
library work in the UK. The following criteria must be met by any
candidates:

Place of residence must be in one of the following countries:
Albania, Belarus, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia,
Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia,
Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro

Applicants must have completed initial studies in librarianship

Applicants must have between 2 and 6 years employment experience in a
Library

There is no application form, but you should submit a supporting statement
in English (no longer than a page, including the reasons why you would be
interested in working in Edinburgh University Library, what the experience
would give you, and how you would apply what you learnt on returning to your
own library) together with a CV in English and the names of two referees.
The Board of the Ian Mowat Memorial Fund will select the successful
applicants. The Board decision will be final.
The placement programmes for the two successful candidates will be based on
their supporting statements. To find out more about Edinburgh University
Library please visit our web site, Library Online, at

“Our month at Edinburgh University Library has given us many ideas.”
“The librarians welcomed us in a splendid way that made us feel part of the
team.”
“The Library service as a whole is committed to promoting self-reliance in
students and academic staff by providing digital resources accessible on-
and off-campus. The library has developed a system of facilities, training
and help, for disabled people, mature students and services tailored to
specific groups. Services for library users include a Learning and Resource
Centre, Computer Labs and Study rooms for individual and group work.”

Applications should be submitted to Sheila Gove, Secretary to the Director
of Library Services, (details in the signature below), by post or by email.
Closing date for applications is 31st March 2006. Successful applicants are
likely to be informed by 30th April 2006.
