Organiser: Collaborative Research Centre 580 at the Universities of
Jena and Halle (SFB 580) in collaboration with the Working Group
Democracy Studies of the German Political Science Association (DVPW)

Topics: 20 years after the (re-)establishment of representative
democracy in most of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), the
International Conference brings together scholars from Germany, CEE
and Western Europe to discuss the development of parliamentary
democracy and parliamentary representation in post-communist Europe.
conference has a broad scope, combining a stock-taking of previous
scholarly work with perspectives for future research, inviting both
theoretical and empirical approaches, and providing the space for
findings from quantitative and qualitative research alike.

The conference is organized in four successive panels:

Panel 1: Between Consolidation and Deformation: Paths of Post-
Communist Polities

Panel 2: European Integration and the Development of Parliamentary
Democracy in the Accession and Candidate Countries: Towards an Ever-
Closer Union? Panel

3: The Public and The Elites: Political Culture And its Impact on
(Parliamentary) Politics Across Central Eastern Europe

Panel 4: Parliamentary Representation and MPs in Post- Communist
Countries: Career-Seekers, Technocrats, and Episodic Politicians.

Researchers from Central and East European countries are strongly
encouraged to deliver paper proposals. The organizers mostly welcome
papers with a comparative approach which may also include comparisons
with West European democracies. Abstracts (2 pages) should indicate
the structure of the paper, its theoretical impact, the main
arguments to be presented, and in case of empirical papers the data
base.

Language: English

Fee: For participants from Central and East European countries the
organizers will cover travel expenses up to a certain maximum amount.

Deadline: November 15, 2009.

The abstracts should be sent by electronic mail to both organizers SFB
