Dear Friends:

Once again Ukraine
has been shut out of the Nieman Fellowship at Harvard.

http://www.nieman.harvard.edu/newsitem.aspx?id=100116

The Nieman Fellowship is a funded opportunity for a
mid-career journalist to spend a year at Harvard University .  Alumni of this program become a network of
mutually supportive journalists around the world.  Over 1,300 fellows from 88 countries have
been Nieman Fellows.

 Ukraine
has not had one Nieman in the whole history of the program.   Poland had Nieman Fellows even
during the Communist era.  The Russian Federation
has had several Nieman Fellows.  In the
2008-2009 academic year, the Russian
Federation had three such fellows and
another coming in September 2009.   China provides
Nieman Fellows on a regular basis.  Even Iran
has had such Fellows.

We all have to ask ourselves why there have been no Nieman Fellows
from Ukraine .

Thank you for your attention.  I would love to hear from you on the reasons
for this absence.
