In today's "newspaper of record," The New York Times, reporter Andrew E. Kramer informs his readers that Russia, while it can deal with the loss of the Baltic states and Central Asia, will never accept the notion of Ukrainians as members of an independent, Western-oriented state because "nearly half [of them] are ethnic Russians."
