The Secret Lives of a Habsburg Archduke

The Ukrainian Institute is pleased to invite you to a book presentation by Yale University historian Timothy Snyder on Thursday, October 9, 2008 at 7pm who will read from and sign copies of his critically acclaimed book The Red Prince. The book is a historical biography of Wilhelm von Habsburg (1895-1949), also known as 
Vasyl Vyshyvanyi.
 
Born a prince, Wilhelm von Habsburg was raised to be king of Poland, but, rebelling against his father’s plans for him, tried instead to become king of Ukraine. To achieve his goal of bringing all of Ukraine – whose lands had been divided between the Habsburg and Russian empires – into the Habsburg monarchy, Wilhelm became a Ukrainian Habsburg: he learned the language, commanded Ukrainian troops in World War I, and bound himself closely to his chosen nation. “Wilhelm became a legend across the country,” writes Snyder, “the Habsburg who spoke Ukrainian, the archduke who loved the common people, the Red Prince.”
