Linux is a clone of Unix and is an operating system generally used to run
servers. Organizations such as google, amazon, and many others use it. It
is also the foundation for newer releases of Macintosh operating systems
as well as variants used in various handheld devices such as cellphones,
PDAs, and PMPs. Linux can be used to run a desktop system in place of the
proprietary Windows-related ones.
Linux development began in the early 90s on the initiative of a Finn by
the name of Linux Torvalds and has proceeded communally since. Some
organizations such as IBM and Google have created "skunk works"
contributing capital and labor to its development. Nevertheless, the bulk
of the initiative has been independent. Several different
Linux distributions have developed, including Ubuntu, CentOS, Redhat, and
Fedora. Fedora is primarily oriented to incorporating the newest features
and requirements, and testing them before they are enabled in more stable
distributions such as Ubuntu and Redhat.
In order for the various software components to be localized, or available
in different languages, volunteers translate things such as help screens
and other types of software interfaces
Below is an email from someone who participates in the localisation of
releases of Fedora, translating into Ukrainian.
