"Winter Sun: A Festival of New Arts and Tradition" will be presented by Yara Arts Group and the Ukrainian Institute from December 19 to 21 at the Ukrainian Institute of America, 2 East 79th Street, Manhattan. The festival will feature traditional "koliada," or winter song rituals, performed by the Koliadnyky of Kryvorivnia and the Tafiychuk family of musicians from the Carpathian Mountains. There will also be an exhibition of art, installations and video, as well as a reception of new interpretations of ritual foods.

The festival will begin on Friday at 8:00 PM with an opening exhibit of art, installations and video. Yara Arts Group has invited twenty artists to imagine a future for the ancient traditional songs. The artists include: Derek Andes, Anya Farion, Annette Friedman, Maya Hayuk, Roman Hrab, Peter Hrycyk, Peter Ihnat, Leonor Jurado, Inka Juslin, Adriana Kulczycky, Svitlana Matviyenko, Andrea Odezynska, Oksana Prokopenko, Mariya Tarassishina, Marybeth Ward and Andrea Wenglowskyj. Their works will be exhibited throughout the three floors of the Ukrainian Institute of America, 2 East 79th Street, which is the former Fletcher Mansion. The Koliadnyky of Kryvorivnia will perform in all the rooms of the Fifth Avenue Mansion, joined by Julian Kytasty, Nadia Tarnawska, Brandon Vance, plus Yara artists Cecilia Arana, Zabryna Guevara, Eleanor Lipat and John Guth and reading of poetry inspired by the ancient texts.

On Saturday, December 20, there will be workshops in winter songs singing and Hutsul musical instruments. Participants are invited to call Yara at (212) 475-6474 to sign up for the workshops. The exhibition will be open and workshops will be held from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

On Saturday evening at 8:00 PM there will be a Gala concert with Koliadnyky of Kryvorivnia and Tafiychuk family of musicians, joined by Svitanya Women’s Vocal Ensemble, Julian Kytasty and the New York Bandura Ensemble, Nadia Tarnawsky, Brandon Vance, Shepko family, Lilia Pavlovsky and family, plus Yara artists. After the concert, food artist and chef Olesia Lew will share with the audience her interpretations of the twelve ritual dishes.
