This is a pretty serious. I wonder if Memorial's records are safe (i.e.,
on a server outside of Russia?)
For those who aren't familiar with this organization, see if you can find
any of your lost/unaccounted relatives here:

Subject: [SEELANGS] historic archives seized by Russian police in St. Petersburg
Yesterday, December 4, 2008, police in St. Petersburg, Russia, seized the
entire archives of Memorial, a research center that for over twenty years has
been collecting data on the criminal acts of various Soviet governments.
Here are some of the links with information on this event:

Interested scholars probably already know about the new "obshchestvennaya
organizatsiya" called Istoricheskaya pamyat' that was created this fall for the
purpose of explaining and justifying many of those crimes--see, for example,
this article in Izvestiya on kollektivizatsiya
http://www.izvestia.ru/forum/?id_publ=3122651
(don't miss the 1027 comments from readers, mostly angry ones)
and this announcement of the creation of Istoricheskaya pamyat':

The two developments seem to be part of the same campaign.
