I think we make too much of the spelling of Kiev (Kyiv) in terms of
innate bias.
As countries and cities change names, editors of books and newspapers
and institutions such as the Library of Congress decide on the
spellings.
Sometimes they change them (e.g Peking to Beijing; Bombay to Mumbai;
Burma to Myanmar) but others they decide to leave as is familiar.
Hence: Vienna not Wien, Moscow not Moskva, Warsaw not Warszawa etc.
This is always argued on the basis of familiarity. A place which is (or
has been) more rarely mentioned in Western media and academia is more
often changed (i.e. Asian, African places) but those which have built a
huge literary warrant over the years (I.e. European countries and
cities) remain in the older, more familiar format.
This, of course, is not a particularly good or accurate practice but it
should not necessarily be interpreted a priori as a political bias.

Daria, you are too trusting: but I don't think Wikipedia would bother to
falsify the population statistics of Gdynia.
If wiki doesn't allow the proper spelling of Kyiv because of tampering
by russophilic monitors , you as a scientist have trust in this source?
I am somewhat surprised.

Biased it might be but I don't think Wikipedia would bother to falsify
the population statistics of Gdynia.
"Vadim's" use of Wikipedia here is a reasonable short cut and does not
reflect upon his academic or intellectual qualifications .
His other postings esp Georgia v Russia conflict show a healthy
scepticism not an entrenched position

Your reliance on wikipedia speaks to your non-academic credentials.
Everyone (everyone) knows that biased people monitor Wikipedia to
maintain PC and in fact prevent the correct spelling of Kyiv to be
listed.

Why not hear my logical arguments before using such strong words as
"denigrate" in this context? You seem to have a very heavy prejudice
against me.
My logical argument is that Gdynia, with population of 252,443 in 2006
-- according to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gdynia
is far from being a major city to be considered for the "international
edition" of this game. This fact undermines any scientific or
statistical credibility of their selection of cities and essentially
means nothing useful for Ukraine or Ukrainian studies. Maybe just some
sweet PR and self-flattery at the risk of complacency and self-deceit.
Ukraine, and specifically Kyiv, can do better. If this argument sounds
logical to you, it can be used to launch a heavy negative personal
attack on you -- would that be a right thing to do?
