Ad hominem statements are not very constructive on a discussion list.
But i will reply.
The naive person in this debacle seems to be Saakashvili. This is not just the opinion of the "liberal West" as I'm sure you are aware. Even clear supporters of Georgia are wondering just what he thought he was doing.
It is strikingly naive to believe that:
a. Russia would not retaliate
b. Russia would not win (militarily)
c. The western powers, esp the US in its overstretched militaty state would assist
d. That such action can be taken without at least informing one's supporters/allies
e. that his would not be somewhat resented by the West as trying to force their hand into accelerating Georgia's entry into NATO
As for what has influenced me, this is peripheral to the discussion on the list. But,in brief, I was a died-in-the-wool Cold Warrior before 1989. Then reality checks appeared and I let myself see rather than dismiss or excuse the dubious if not criminal motives in the actions of the US and former Eastern block states which were "heroes" in the CW period.

I love that "nevermind that it fell into a probable provocation trap..."
The provocation was precisely timed (the invasion obviously needed to
coincide with the Olympic Games) and absolutely unavoidable. Daria is very
much under the influence of the Western ultra liberal thought and hence,
forgive me, very naive.
