[Aaus-community-list] [aaus-list] a deeply worrisome series of events in Ukraine: a clash of freedom of speech and extremist voilence

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to draw your attention to a series of events that have been taking in Ukraine (first in L'viv, then in Kyiv) over the past few weeks. Krytyka, the acclaimed publishing house that is well-known to most of you, recently published an anthology of lesbian and gay poetry and fiction in Ukrainian translation (co-edited by three young poets, Oles' Barlih from zaporizhzhia, Al'bina Pozdniakova from L'viv, and Iryna Shuvalova from Kyiv). During the L'viv book forum the book was announced at a press-conference and then marked with a literary reading. Both events were attacked by young men who claimed to represent the organizations "Tryzub im. Stepana Bandery" and "Svoboda." They vandalized books and attacked the representatives of the publishing house. The was only belated and minimal response from the police.

A few days ago, two more public events related to the anthology took place in Kyiv. At the bookstore Ye, a public debate took place on the occasion of the publication of this book. A few days later, Ya-halereia, one of Kyiv's leading venues for contemporary art, owned by the rock musician Pavlo Hudimov of the band Okean El'zy, debated this book and the heavy-handed ban on the release of the film _Bruno_ by the Ukrainian authorities. The panelists at both events included not only representatives of the publisher and the coeditors of the anthology, but also such acclaimed scholars and public intellectuals as Tamara Hundorova and Mariia Maierchyk. At the bookstore, again a group of young men attacked the presenters and the books and destroyed furniture. Later that night, a gang of thugs violently attacked a group of persons who were in attendance at this event, injuring two of them (both journalists). At the event at Ya-halereia, security was provided by police and by private guards, but later that night, unknown persons smashed all its windows with stones and defaced it with graffiti. Further to this, last night the gallery space was burned down by arsonists. According to the police, some of the persons involved in the pogroms in both Kyiv and L'viv were the same persons, and after the incident at the bookstore Ye one of the persons detained by police was the head of the Kyiv branch of "Svoboda."

This escalating series of events has so far received only minimal coverage in Ukrainian media except in private blogs. To my knowledge, there has been no coverage of it in English so far. I hope some of you would express solidarity with the victims of these violent attacks and join me in denouncing the perpetrators.

Нині вночі спалено ґалерею Гудімова на Волоській, де минулої п’ятниці в
рамках фестивалю «Остання Барикада» відбулася дискусія (зокрема за участи п.
Марії Маєрчик і «Критики» у моїй особі, адже за головні сюжети для
обговорення правили події навколо антології «120 сторінок содому» та
заборона фільму «Бруно») про гомофобію, нетерпимість і толерантність в
українському суспільстві. Тоді ж, у п’ятницю, після дискусії, вочевидь, ті
самі «тризубівці» (а може і «свободівці»), які напередодні намагалися
зірвати презентацію антології в книгарні «Є», вже було вчинили певний
погром, що його сьогодні завершено в такий спосіб.

Наразі медії, крім «Главреду», цей брутальний акт терору зиґнорували; нічого
немає і на сайті УНІАНу (як, власне, не було повідомлено і про п’ятничний
погром). Така прикра громадська байдужість напевно спонукатиме погромників,
які за вельми короткий час пройшли шлях від майонезу і товченого перцю до
побиття і підпалів, чинити щораз гірше насильство. Мусимо давати цьому раду,
і то негайно.

З огляду на пасивність ЗМІ, прошу всіх, мірою можливого, всіма спосоьами
поширити цю інформацію, аби удоступнити її принаймні для культурної
спільноти.

Фундація Центр Сучасного Мистецтва висловлює солідарність і підтримку арт-центру Павла Гудімова і закликає мистецьку спільноту не лишатися байдужою до актів вандалізму й насильства. Мовчати – значить дозволити нападникам повторювати свої дії, значить дозволити суспільству прийняти їх.
Напад на Я-Галерею було здійснено після дискусії (минулої п’ятниці) в рамках фестивалю «Остання Барикада», коли обговорювались події навколо антології «120 сторінок содому» (видавництво «Критика») та заборона фільму «Бруно», йшлося про гомофобію, нетерпимість і толерантність в українському суспільстві.
