CALL FOR PAPERS

Villains and Victims: Justice, violence and retribution in late Imperial and early Soviet Russia

Venue: University of Nottingham, UK. School of History

Date: 6-7 April 2010

Format of conference:

All papers will be circulated to participants one month in advance. Selected conference papers will be published in a peer reviewed publication.

Questions of justice, violence and retribution have been the subject of increasing scholarly interest in the last few years, with a number of individual research projects engaging with these themes. This conference represents an attempt to contextualise and to harmonise the disparate micro-level studies that have been conducted thus far on this topic, and to use these studies to engage with larger themes. Papers are welcomed from scholars working on the history of late Imperial and early Soviet Russia, and from scholars of other disciplines working in related fields. Geographical scope will be restricted to the former Soviet Union. Graduate students as well as established scholars are invited to submit papers.
Papers are invited to engage with the following themes:
-Crime and Punishment
-Relationships between state and individual violence
-Deviance- state definitions and societal understandings
-Societal attitudes towards crime and violence
-Perceptions of punishment, imprisonment, exile.
-Distinctions between 'political' and 'criminal' crimes.
-Violence against the personality (violence as acts/phenomena, but also as rhetoric and experience)

Deadline for submission of proposals: 15 October 2009. Submissions should be sent by email in the form of a one page outline with title to sarah.badcock at nottingham.ac.uk <mailto:sarah.badcock at nottingham.ac.uk>
