If you started the INS process already, then simply contact family or friend in Ukraine to go quietly and get a new passport made for you. It will cost a few bucks, but it can be done. This is the easiest, because going to the consulate will take a very long time. You can apply for a duplicate I-94 (check the INS website for info). If you have not begun the INS process - get on it today! In some states the wait for the green card is horrendous. My wife waited two years in New Jersey - that was for the interview. The actual green card came seven months after that. INS is a disaster, so you need to move on it. Good luck.
