To visit Italy you'll need to get a Schengen visa from Italian consul or embassy. I do not have an experience of getting Schengen visa from Italian consul, but I got it with no problems from French and Netherlands consuls before (I'm in the same situation: green card and Ukrainian passport). As long as you bring all the required documents (look at Italian embassy website for the list), it should be easy. The main difference of getting the visa here, in the US as opposed to Ukraine, is that nobody questions whether you have intentions to stay in Schengen states forever :)
