: Dear Pan’stvo!

: I am Ukrainian Citizen / US Resident (Green Card holder).
: I suspect that the company I am working for is going to send me to Ukraine (or Russia, or Belorus…) to represent company’s interests on local market. It is known that US Residents may not reside outside of US longer than 1 year (as far as I know). However, contract is for 3 years. Good money, really good money will be paid for repatriation. Even though I can come back to USA for a few weeks and move back again to wherever they are sending me to, eventually Immigration Service will question me…
: My question is: is there any kind of petition may be filed with INS to maintain my immigrant status so I can live overseas working for company but that time is counted as I live in USA?I do not want to lose time towards my US Citizenship. Moreover, the company is US-based and pays taxes to US Treasury.
: Is there anything can be done about it?
: Thank y’ll!

: Hohol

In general, permanent residents who will be abroad for more than one year but who do not want to abandon their residence may apply for a re-entry permit. If such a permit is granted, generally, the permanent resident may remain abroad for more than one year and re-enter into the US without losing US resident status.
In most instances, however, a one-year absence abroad will break the continuous residence requirement for naturalization.
If you want information that is specific to your case, please write to me directly.
