:1st Security Bank (Pevnist) in Chicago has a special promotion for sending money to Ukraine which is considerably below most banks and way cheaper than Western Union: up to $100 costs $7.50, $100-300 is $12.50, $300-500 is $17.50, $500-1,000 is $25. Call 1-773-772-4500 for other low rates.
: No agency will send for less than that. Most banks charge about $30 and I think Western Union is ~$50. The Western Union is priced higher because it is a "to the door" service, meaning that the $$$ are hand-delivered garanteed in Ukraine. The bank is lower I suppose because there is some risk taken by the recipient if they have to go to the bank to retrieve the cash - plus I have heard that the bank at the other end may charge a trnasfer fee.
: The next best solution is to keep your ears open for anyone traveling to Ukraine. That's how most of my acquaintances do it.
: Lastly, I would not advise this, but I have known people to send such small amounts via regular mail. They say to wrap the money in aluminum foil - I have NO idea why that would make any difference. Sometimes it gets there, sometimes it doesn't - there's a risk. But for this small an amount, maybe the risk is worth it?
