I am about to mail the I-485 paperwork now, so I'm fairly familiar with what you're talking about. First, you (or better yet, your husband, since I assume English is his first language) should look over these INS sites:

You almost certainly do *not* want to visit your parents, i.e., leave the U.S., until you've completed the Adjustment of Status process:
"Can I Travel Outside the United States?
If you are applying for adjustment to permanent resident status, you must receive advance permission to return to the United States if you are traveling outside the United States. This advance permission is called Advance Parole. If you do not obtain Advance Parole before you leave the country, you will abandon your application with the BCIS and you may not be permitted to return to the United States"

I don't understand this. If you filled out the paperwork honestly and correctly, you don't have any major baggage (e.g., a criminal record), and you married a citizen, you shouldn't have a problem. What 'sucks'?
