My experience was that your parents might not acually need an invitation letter, but just to be safe it is better to write one, explaining your status in the US, their purpose of visit, its duration, your guarantees that you'll pay for the tickets (if necessary) and their stay, telling where they are going to live in the US. I was also unlucky with getting a visa for my mom, even if the reason for her visit was more than sufficient (birth of her granddaughter). They denied without further explanations. When we sent the inquiry to the embassy through the senator, they said they didn't like the amount of income specified by my mother and said that her ties with the US were stronger than those with Ukraine (absolute nonsense!!! her entire family but me and all posessions are in Ukraine). My advice would be to take care of this aspect - get some kind of document, confirming her very high income, I would say not less than $500 a month, preferably more :) Then again, two of my girlfriend did not have any trouble AT ALL getting their parents to visit them. You never know...
