To all:

I am researching scholarship and/or sponsorship opportunities for a Ukrainian student living in Russia to study in the US. She has been in the US previously, with the CCUSA (CampCounselors USA) program. I helped her during her stay here in New York and I took the time to inquire about her interests, goals, etc. She is of Ukrainian origin, her family having been forcefully relocated to the same parts of Russia where Taras Shevchenko was sentenced to (which, contrary to popular thought, is not "Siberia", but rather the region bordering the Aral Sea). She has been studying English for over 10 years with linguistic aspirations, such as becoming a translator. Academically she holds an impeccable record at her local university, where she entered her third year this fall. Undoubtedly the trait that struck me most about her is her strong determination to retain (and in some aspects regain) her Ukrainian heritage. She considers herself a true Ukrainian and during her brief stay here in the US she made that clear. She volunteered at Verkhovyna's August 24th celebration, helped out at the church in Astoria, and interacted almost exclusively with Ukrainians. She openly displayed her intrinsic warmheartedness through her tireless acts of kindness and gratitude, not once forgetting her family, who had put together just enough money for her brief travel to the US. As if she weren't busy enough, she also found the time to research academic opportunities here. Needless to say, CUNY's (City University of New York) diverse offerings piqued her interest and she collected all necessary paperwork to transfer to CUNY next year. She faces no academic or enthusiastic obstacles, but rather financial ones. That is why she has turned to me for support in her endeavor. I feel that her motives are quite respectable and that she deserves the opportunity to study here, which is why I will help inasmuch as I can. However, I am not able to defray the costs fully. And so I submit my petition to support this unique girl who has nothing to lose but a wonderful opportunity to realize her aspirations. I kindly request that my petition be considered seriously. I will be very grateful to anybody and everybody who can inform me about a plausible scholarship or sponsorship opportunity for her. If any of you would find it in your heart to support this girl in any way, I would be more than happy to speak with you about this in greater detail off-list (simply send me an e-mail to the address I posted with and I will reply as soon as I can). Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to hearing from you!

Very gratefully and respectfully,

Bohdan Yaremko
