These Ukrainian American and Canadian organizations will not change unless well motivated and educated students from Ukraine get involved in them. This is not a likely behavior because civic organizations and participation in Ukraine was weak because of Soviet authoritarianism.
Many organizations here are beyond repair with reference to updating and downsizing because their original missions are no longer relevant or because they are complex and not easily changed. New immigrants are not likely to move to Scranton to update the Ukrainian Fraternal Association.
So people from Ukraine will have to look to those organizations of potential value and of real assets. Alternatively they will have to create organizations of their own to serve their own needs.
But people today are leaving an independent Ukraine rather than a nonexistent one as in the past. So the needs, emotions, and perceptions are likely to be very different about the groupings people here will form.
