Your husband can work for 20 hours a week as long as he is considered to be a student. After graduation he can work only with a work permit. In order to receive it, he needs to file documents to INS through the international office in his school. However, I would not worry too much. You guys are merried, and after he gets his Green Card there should be no questions about his work authorization. Then, he is considered to be a full-time resident.
: I am not a lawyer.
: But deal with students. The F-1 visa includes permission to do research for the degree and apparently 20 hours of work (on site?) above and beyond that. Additional teaching and research for income would not appear to fall under that visa. There is a clause for practical training or work after the degree I believe.
: Your I office should have the information.
: These sites appear useful. The Stanford site appears particularly complete.

: : Hi,
: : I am a US citizen and my husband is in the US on an F-1 visa, studying for a PhD. He should be applying for a green card, but does he also need to get a work permit in order to continue his research? Does this mean that after filing the application he might have to wait 3-4 months before being able to start work again?
: : Please help!
