I am an attorney practicing US immigration laws. Julia's info is correct, except it takes close to six years now for the spouse of a GC holder to get his/her immigrant visa.
If you do consider changing her visa to for instance that of a student, do it before filing the I-130 petition. Doing it the other way round will reduce her chance of approval for the student visa.
