The consequence is that you enter Ukraine the same way any other American citizen does, except you have some special consideration because of your Ukrainian heritage.
The special consideration is that when you apply for a tourist visa, you will not be required to submit a letter of invitation. All diasporan Ukrainians, no matter which wave of immigration or generation, are given this waiver.
For other visa types, such as a business visa, I think the regulations are the same no matter what your ancestry is. Check with the Consulate of Ukraine (do a search on this site) for visa regulations.
I know of many former Ukrainian citizens who travel to Ukraine as visitors without any difficulty.
