I am not a lawyer.
But deal with students. The F-1 visa includes permission to do research for the degree and apparently 20 hours of work (on site?) above and beyond that. Additional teaching and research for income would not appear to fall under that visa. There is a clause for practical training or work after the degree I believe.
Your I office should have the information.
These sites appear useful. The Stanford site appears particularly complete.

: Hi,
: I am a US citizen and my husband is in the US on an F-1 visa, studying for a PhD. He should be applying for a green card, but does he also need to get a work permit in order to continue his research? Does this mean that after filing the application he might have to wait 3-4 months before being able to start work again?
: Please help!
