Buying a Social Security card can make it impossible for a person to ever get permanent residence.
If a person uses a fake Social Security card to get a job (the employer should make a copy of that card to give you a job)and the INS or the Department of Labor agents happen to check that employer's documents, in many states, the person using the card can be charged with a felony.
I know that people buy cards and get away with it, but my colleagues and I see the people who don't get away with such things -- and there are many of them.
A Taxpayer ID number is free, and people who cannot get Social Security numbers can get a Taxpayer ID number.
