The best way is to go there and see for yourself. You might be surprised not to see any 'screeming' poverty in Ukraine like, for example, you may find in some Latin American countries. But, you have to take in account that most of people from Ukraine (not only Ukrainians!)are left after the collaps of Soviet regime there. The poorest countries of the West at that time looked as a better choice than anywere else in post-communist space. I think the main reason for immigration was always an economical one and after the political one. Presently, it seems that mostly students from Ukraine are going every year toward the West to do any seasonal work.By the way, Ukraine today is facing similar problems with illigal immigrants from Asia comming into the country through Russia.
