Ira, you've got me right, it takes them about a year to schedule an interview. The test per se is not that complicated, but you have to know certain things. And it's not only history - like I said it's a three-part test and history is one of the parts. The other two are US Government and English (language). On each part they usually ask 3-5 questions, but they can pick those from a list of over a hundred... There is a book that has all the info, I am sure any library would have plenty of copies and any librarian would be able to help you find it, just ask for some literature on the US citizenship test.
As far as those Latinos you've mentioned - it strongly depends on a particular officer's personality. If he/she is a Latino him/herself, they'd probably look through the fingers on an elderly person that cannot speek English, but I would not count on that in your case. For me the language part was pretty much a formality - the lady said she saw I could speak from my history and government answers, just asked me to write something, like "It's a beautiful day!" But the first two parts she did go through thoroughly.
