Where did you get the idea that the American gov't does not recognize foreign marriages? That is completely inaccurate.
The US gov't recognizes almost all foreign marriages that are recognized by the country in which they took place.
The only kind of foreign marriage that is not recognized by the US gov't is marriage by proxy (i.e. one of the parties is not present at the marrriage ceremony)that has not been consummated.
Persons who have been married abroad and who marry someone else in the US without divorcing the spouse whom they married abroad are comitting bigamy.
