I am not sure about several months... Some time ago I processed my parent's papers and it took a year and a half for them to get their green-cards. After I submitted all paperwork including my petition for immediate realtives to Vermont, a letter of acceptance (that is the package was opened) arrived in two months and then for another 9 months the case was in consideration. After it was approved, there was an interview scheduling, which was not immediately either, altogether the time between my mailing papers to INS and them receiving green-cards was about 20 months.
Maybe with spouses it goes faster, but that's what I know from my petition experience.
