: : : I had NO IDEA so many people would misunderstand my simple statement about learning Russian.
: : : I know that Ukranians are proud of their language and culture. Also, I know that many resent the interference and "cultural imperialism" of the Russian language as imposed by the Soviet regimes. I know that after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukranians began to work hard to restore their language to its rightful place.
: : : I have no prejudices against the Ukranian language or bias in favor of Russian. I included the information that I am studying Russian because it means that I can also understand some Ukranian. However, I didn't feel it was appropriate (or fair to the readers) to post my entire life story and raison d'etre on a public BBS the first time around.
: : : I did not intend my original post to become the start of an international discussion about the politics of language and linguistics. I believe there is a more appropriate area on this site for the discussion of that topic.
: : : Some have made suggestions about my situation and intentions based on erroneous assumptions. I would thank them not to jump to conclusions. I would thank them further if they would refrain from clogging the message board and wasting bandwith with those assumptions! Hee hee ;^)
: : : Those who contact me privately and ask about the Russian/Ukranian language issue will receive a full explanation if they really want it. For those who don't want to know, get on with your lives and start another thread. You'll be happy you did.
: All this discussion about language????
: We all know that any Ukrainian would give up both the Russian and Ukrainain language if it meant coming to the U.S!!!!!
:In other words, they will start forgetting the Russian much faster if Ukraine gets better economicly and it would be not nesessary to make that "choice" you mentioned.
