Ukraine is still in a fight for freedom. Russia and Russian extremist elements living in Ukraine continue to attempt to subvert Ukrainian freedom particularly by attacking the Ukrainian language. That's why it's such a touchy issue. It will be another 50 or more years for the issue to "erode" along with the Russian language that was imposed upon Ukraine through the murder of tens of millions of Ukrainians by Russians. I hope this clears up your misunderstanding.
