: : : I had NO IDEA so many people would misunderstand my simple statement about learning Russian.

: : : I know that Ukranians are proud of their language and culture. Also, I know that many resent the interference and "cultural imperialism" of the Russian language as imposed by the Soviet regimes. I know that after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukranians began to work hard to restore their language to its rightful place.
: : : I have no prejudices against the Ukranian language or bias in favor of Russian. I included the information that I am studying Russian because it means that I can also understand some Ukranian. However, I didn't feel it was appropriate (or fair to the readers) to post my entire life story and raison d'etre on a public BBS the first time around.
: : : I did not intend my original post to become the start of an international discussion about the politics of language and linguistics. I believe there is a more appropriate area on this site for the discussion of that topic.
: : : Some have made suggestions about my situation and intentions based on erroneous assumptions. I would thank them not to jump to conclusions. I would thank them further if they would refrain from clogging the message board and wasting bandwith with those assumptions! Hee hee ;^)
: : : Those who contact me privately and ask about the Russian/Ukranian language issue will receive a full explanation if they really want it. For those who don't want to know, get on with your lives and start another thread. You'll be happy you did.

: : You've got it right. some people have nothing else to do just to stir s..t with languages delemma. I'm ukranian, and speak both as russian as ukrainian...and not shy to speak it to any of those groups with arrogant attitude. But have to admit there is relactance between them to forget about "the problem" and they take it to the extent of "last day on Fiji" . Dont worry about it.

: : Can tell you they mix with each other quite well in New Zealand

: :Doroguy' Vovic!
: It's very nice of you that you're speaking both Ukrainian and Russian language and consider yourself Ukrainian. To your knowledge nobody is trying to steer something that you've just mentioned. You're making it up, buddy!
: However Ukrainian people are offended for some reasons: first, here in the US, nobody wants to be called "russian" ( perhaps you don't care. . . )-- it happens sometimes. Secondly, Ukrainians can not tolerate some people like "Victoria" (see "looking for him" above) who perform for the Ukrainian national basketball team and makes a remark" a zacheim mnie znat' Ykrainskiy".

i agree with your point on "victoria's" position, Bud. she doest seem "rozumna" enough as many others, especially in larger ukrainian cities, where stigma of unpopularity of ukrainian language had been promoted for decades.

but overall what metters is that the way that at present polemika such as in this chart doesnt help to find the solution fo neighbouring countries to function normally

By the way russians descented from Ukraine as you probably know, and if you not secure with present security of ukrainian lingo, try to put your mind in "patronizing" way, so russian language would be a part of ukrainian culture with all weight of
its classical literature.

See ya, Vovik
